The return of Mkulukutamoyo: Malawi leader back home amid swirling reshuffle rumours

President Peter Mutharika — affectionately known to Malawians as Mkulukutamoyo — has returned back home today, returning from a private visit to South Africa amid mounting speculation that a dramatic cabinet shake-up is on the cards.

Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Saidi confirmed the President’s return through Kamuzu International Airport on Saturday afternoon, following his departure for South Africa on August 5.

The trip marks Mutharika’s fourth journey abroad since sweeping to power in the September 16 polls — and comes at a politically charged moment, with his administration bracing to mark a full year in office next month.

Behind the scenes, speculation is reaching fever pitch that the President is preparing to reshuffle his top team in a bid to reinvigorate a government facing mounting pressure to deliver.

And it’s not just his cabinet Mutharika appears determined to shake up. The President has also fired a defiant warning shot at rivals circling for his job — declaring in no uncertain terms that he intends to serve out his FULL term until 2030.

In a pointed message to those eyeing State House, Mutharika made clear he expects presidential hopefuls to hold their nerve — and their ambitions — until his constitutional mandate runs its course, insisting any leadership contest must wait its turn.
