Wanderers pay emotional tribute to beloved ‘Gogo Karonga’ at tombstone unveiling

Mighty Wanderers FC has led an outpouring of grief for their most flamboyant and beloved supporter — admitting the club is still mourning the loss of the woman affectionately known as “Gogo Karonga” more than two years after her death.

Ellen Karonga, who died aged 78 on May 10, 2024, was remembered as an unforgettable presence on the terraces — a striking figure whose dazzling outfits in the national flag and Wanderers’ iconic colours made her instantly recognisable to generations of football fans since the 1970s.

The emotional tribute came during a poignant tombstone unveiling ceremony held for Karonga, her late husband Neckson and their first-born daughter Iris, at Chiwinja Village in Traditional Authority Mpama, Chiradzulu District.

Speaking on behalf of Nomads president Thomson Mpinganjira, Wanderers director of football David Kanyenda admitted the club deeply misses the elegance and flair Karonga brought to matchday, describing her as a true icon whose loyalty and style became inseparable from the club’s identity.

Karonga leaves behind five children, including United Transformation Movement (UTM) secretary general Willet Karonga, who joined mourners at the emotional gathering.

The ceremony drew a host of notable figures eager to pay their respects, including former Wanderers chairperson Humphreys Mvula and former minister and diplomat Ziliro Chibambo — a fitting turnout for a woman whose devotion to the beautiful game made her a beloved fixture far beyond the stands.
