Malawi govt unveils K1bn Nsanje Osiyana Rural Hospital project

Government has unveiled its plans to construct a K1 billion Osiyana Rural Hospital in Nsanje.

Deputy Speaker Mcheka-Chilenje  hailed government for plan to construct rural hospital in Nsanje

The development comes as communities in Osiyana and surrounding areas are currently being forced to travel long distances to Trinity Mission Hospital where, apart from footing transport costs, patients also pay for all treatment costs.

This has been the case since the occurrence of the 2015 devastating floods which destroyed infrastructure thereby affecting delivery of medical services at their nearest health center Makhanga.

Unveiling the project over the weekend, Director of Planning in the Ministry of Health (MoH) Emma Mabvumbe said she is certain that the facility will help to address challenges in maternal and child health.

“I believe the unveiled facility will help to reduce maternal deaths in the district but also the country which is currently standing at 432 per every 100,000 pregnant women annually,” Mabvumbe said.

In her remarks, Nsanje North legislator Esther Mcheka Chilenje hailed government for living up to its promise of constructing a new rural hospital, saying it will enable communities seek medical treatment within their vicinity.

“This is a very good development in as far as this area is concerned. We have been waiting for this day to come. I am very thankful to the current government for this development,” Mcheka Chilenje said.

She, however, challenged couples to compliment government efforts in reducing rapid population growth by embracing family planning concepts.

Furthermore, Mcheka Chilenje warned employees of the construction company against indulging in sexual immorality with young girls in the area as has been the case with other development projects in the country saying the vice fuels orphanhood.

The year-long contract has been awarded to Tiyesenawo and DHD as a joint venture.

The project is being implemented under the Emergency Flood Recovery Program with World Bank financial support
