Malawi should increase number of its psychiatrists -Mzuzu Mayor

Mayor for Mzuzu City Councilor William Mkandawire has called on government to ensure that there is an increase of psychiatrists in the country.

Speaking  after World Mental Health Day commemorations at Mzuzu Prison ground, Mkandawire said the country has a shortage of psychiatrists to deal with mental problems affecting some people in the country.

The commemorations were held under the theme, “Mental Health in the Workplace”.

“There are a number of people working under stress and depression in different workplaces; therefore, there is a need for more psychiatrists to address this problem,” said Mkandawire who was guest of honour at the event.

St John of God Hospital hosted the event to show how concerned it is with the seriousness of the problem of stress is in workplaces in the country. It offers mental health services at its facilities in Mzuzu and Lilongwe.

The event attracted members of staff and learners from Blessings Academy, Moyale Primary and Chibavi Community Day Secondary schools, among others.
