Korfball Association of Malawi conducted its first elective general assembly at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on Sunday where interim Treasurer Enock Zalhuso beat interim General Secretary Mzee Makawa 7 votes against 5.
Kyube Mwalwanda and Clara Luhanga did not face any opposition taking the positions of Vice-Chairperson and Treasurer respectively.
Renowned netball umpire Faggie Mwalweni , who was the Southern Region Chairperson, floored Aaron Chipiko 8 against 4 votes to win the General Secretary position.
Wezzie Banda and Aaron Phiri were elected executive members who will be joined by co-opted members Sophie Kathewera (umpire), Aaron Phiri from MDF, and yet to be identified representatives from Malawi School Sports Association (Massa) and Unima.
However the elections, which have given the new officer bearers a four-year mandate, were not short of controversy.
Makawa, who was the interim General Secretary was due to take up the hot seat unopposed while Zalhuso was nominated for the Treasurer’s post.
But there were changes after the Returning Officer, International Korfball Federation (IKF) Africa Secretary General Tarirai Chadebah called for fresh nominations for candidates following unanimous agreement by the members.
Chadebah said he was impressive that the delegates managed to vote candidates of their choice.
“I am happy that people managed to say whatever they wanted through the voting. Though there were some changes. In future we should their right procedures of submitting the nominations through Malawi National Council of Sports,” Chadebah said.
The elections for the Technical Director were also shelved until Sports Council scrutinizes the CVs of the candidates Evance Chiphwanya and Brian Mopiwa.
