Malawi man at large after chopping wife’s fingers in jealous rage

Police in Malawi’s southern district of Balaka are hunting for a 52-year-old man who allegedly driven by jealousy chopped off his wife’s fingers with a panga knife after accusing her of having a secret love affair.

Balaka police spokesperson Joseph Sauka told Nyasa Times that the suspect William Duwa chopped off her wife’s two fingers during the night of Monday the 7th January, 2013.

Sauka says the victim Chrissy Kunkeyani 49 told the police that her husband went out to a drinking spree and upon arrival at home, he started accusing her of having an extra maritial affair before started beating her.  He later chopped off her two fingers using a Panga knife and escaped leaving her in a pool of blood.

“The victim is currently admitted to Balaka District Hospital where she is receiving treatment while the suspect is still at large,” says Sauka while appealing to the general public to tip them of his whereabouts.

Women continue to suffer domestic violence in Malawi

The two, Sauka says, have been in marriage for 35 years and have 5 children but the victim has been abused in so many ways  but she was just taking it as part of life.

Once arrested, the suspect is expected to answer a case of grievous harm contrary to section 238 of the Penal code an offence that attracts a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment.

The victim Chrissy Kunkeyani comes from Kambuku village, Traditional Authority Kwataine in Ntcheu district while Duwa comes from Mangochi district.

They were both residing at Mangerengere location in Balaka Township.
