Malawi MPs passes bill to legalise marijuana for medical use
Malawi’s legislators have passed a bill to legalize cannabis, the plant that produces hemp and marijuana for medical use, as the country looks to reduce its reliance on tobacco.

Parliament on Thursday afternoon passed the Cannabis Regulation Bill which seeks to distinguish the criminalised Indian hemp (chamba) from medicinal cannabis through cultivation, production, possession and marketing.
The bill which was first championed by former legislator Boniface Kadzamira was tabled by Agriculture Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa but stops short of decriminalizing recreational use.
Legislators backed it, saying it was better to regulate the hemp trade and help Malawi’s economy to grow.
The new legislation will allow licensing farmers to grow the drug strictly for medicinal use.
Tobacco industry, the country’s biggest foreign exchange earner, has dwindled due to anti-tobacco campaigns, farmers are now looking to grow cannabis following the legalisation of hemp.
Advocates of the medical use of marijuana say it can help with a range of conditions, easing chronic pain and the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and paraplegia.
However, anti-drug campaigners worry legalizing medical marijuana will encourage more recreational use but they’re facing an uphill battle against those who argue to regulate the trade and help Malawi’s economy grow.
Advocates of the medical use of marijuana and its products say it can help with a range of conditions, easing chronic pain and the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and paraplegia. Such sentiments come from people who try some CBD honey, tea, disposable vape and other similar products for medical use.

This is very big for Malawi and the world at large. Growing chamba is easy no need for fertilizer. Please let’s not abuse this privilege which the government has given us,by taking it that they have legalized smoking of chama for anyone, no actually the legalization is for medical purposes. They are patients whose treatment will require marijuana. So for such permits will be given to use the drug. But if you think business this is the time for you to grow it and find a market were you can sell and make money.
So please Malawian let’s not abuse this opportunity but use it wisely for business and development. In the USA states like Colorado have benefited very much from marijuana in taxes. So if you have munda chakuchoda uko instead of kilima nandoro limani chamba mulemera.
The government must just help us in regulating the market so we have were to sell it.
And this is why we will never develop as a country. How is legalizing medicinal marijuana increase your chances of clinical depression? Really guys? How is smoking weed similar to being gay???
Tidye chamba momasuka apa
Takunyadirani otiimirira mu mpaliyamenti. Tsono pakufunika maso pama operations and performance of these markets otherwise instead of creating a solution, you will create a problem. I love Malawi and her people.
When can people start growing? People are talking bad things, but let me say that even tobbacco is bad for healthy but is grown in Malawi and most of the farmers do not smoke tobacco yet they grow it.
How I wish Peter Tosh was alive he would have come to Malawi for three musical shows and declares himself a Malawian. He would have composed a new song called ” free at last”

The Bible says woe to those who call evil good and good evil. Nowadays everything that was called an abomination in those days has became good, we are indeed at the end of days, where is the world heading? homosexuality was a taboo in those days but now it is like a fashion if you say something against it you called all sort of names homophobic etc. Lately they wanted to legalise abortion in some parts of the world in pretext they call it women rights, what’s kind of rights that kills a human being? Statics shows that ever since Marijuana was legalized in American cases of mental disorder has increased homicide has increased crime rate has increased etc. Do you call that good? I can assure you nothing good will come out of Marijuana legalization. instead of prosperity, more people will go mad. let’s wait and see the outcome of it.
choka iwe
Back your self up when making these stupid claims. It’s okay to be scared but it’s stupid to come up with assumptions without proof. Am 100% sure no one who is gay, smokes weed or does whatever you were told not to do will come between you and your faith
Please your understanding of the Bible is not correct. Marijuana is not evil and no where in the Bible is it addressed as such. What is evil is the devil who entices people to do evil. Malawian can be misled by your biased view of what the Bible says about marijuana. Infacts all plants were created by God marijuana included. It is how we use these plants which make them appear evil but they are not bad at all.
Issues of mental health are not related to marijuana, ask people that detail with mental issues. It’s a an erroneous concept we have had in Malawi that CHAMBA chimapengesa masala. Infact the legalization is for medicinal purposes, not for leisure.
Look at this as a very big breakthrough for Malawis economy, you will benefit from marijuana much more than tobacco.Change you thinking 123

This is good news for Malawi and the only way to come out of poverty. Please streamline regulations so that ordinary Malawians should benefit.
