Malawi music free downloads web launched

Malawian musicians now have a new platform to promote their music further, thanks to the coming of One Malawi Music, a free-music downloads website.

A brainchild of Timve Media Group (TMG), the website allows registered users to download legal Malawian music for free.

TMG chief Pempho Kafoteka told Nyasa Times that the website,http://1mwmusic.net/, has been developed after recognizing the growth of Malawi’s music industry.

“We also noted that most listeners do not really know where to get Malawian music online as musicians use different services to service online listeners.

“The website will bridge that gap by making it easier for musicians to give their fans access to their music as they can now easily find all their music in one place, sorted by genres,” says Kafoteka.

According to TMG, musicians will be able to upload their music, both singles and whole albums available for free download at any time.

Welcoming the development, music producer and promoter Percy Manyozo of Pro Pee Records, in an interview had this to say: “This website will push Malawian music forward because we never had a proper channel for people to get our music, mostly those who are outside the country.”

“It is one of the channels that we can expose our music to the world and not only Malawi or Africa. Malawians had trouble times downloading music from a recognised website so this is the beginning of victory,” said Manyozo who is currently promoting up and coming female singer Kalista.

The website comes at a time when Malawian musicians say their talent is not paying off as most people these days prefer ‘burning’ music or having free downloads on the internet than buying CDs which cost between K1,000 and K1,500.

Kafoteka however observed that “free music has a lot of benefits, including exposure by allowing potential new fans to sample your music. You could argue that getting your music on radio is in a way giving out your music for free as people don’t pay for listening to your music on radio.”

While hailing the coming of One Music Malawi, urban beats maker and keen follower of the local music industry, God’s Favourite, said Malawi needed an online channel that would be profitable to the country’s artists.

“Kudos to Timve [Media Group] for this platform. Hopefully, it will push the artists to make the rest of their music available online, at a price of course,” said the UK-based Malawian producer, real name Brian Nkata.

“It’s very hard to access it [Malawian music] anywhere online…hardly anyone from Malawi markets their music online. People just hook each other up and that’s it, we wonder why we’re not making any money.”

To download music from the website, visitors have to sign-up with their name and email address and chose a password; they can then log-in into the website and download music of their choice.

TMG is also providing an online video gallery where they are collecting videos of Malawian artists to make it easier for people that are interested in Malawian music videos.
