Malawi musician Dan Lu divorces: Wife claims ‘Uhule ndi Mtima’ star is abusive
Celebrated Malawian Afro-Pop artist, Dan Lufani has pulled the plug on his four years marriage with Thalisa Lufani (nee Chimbalanga) and the consent divorce has since been granted by Blantyre Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Lufani filed for divorce registered as Civil Case Number 79 of 2013 on grounds that the marriage was irretrievably broken-down.
However, Thalisa has questioned the court ruling on the matter, arguing she was not given a right to be heard as required for natural justice to be dispersed.
Magistrate Diana Mangwana granted the consent divorce (in chamber) certificates to the two sides with a fee of K13, 000 which is to be paid by Monday.
According to the Consent Judgment, the divorce came about following persistent differences between the couple which resulted in the two living separately.
“A decree of dissolution of the marriage on the ground of irretrievably breakdown be and is hereby granted. All matrimonial property to remain with the respondent,” reads the ruling in part.
The Consent Divorce Judgment has been signed by Dan Lu and Thalisa as well as their marriage counselors.
Divorced couple is expected to be back in court on April 11, 2013 for further orders on sharing of matrimonial property.
Reaction
When Nyasa Times contacted the 30-year-old Lufani, he declined to comment and later on switched off his phone, but Thalisa 26, while questioning the court ruling confessed to still being in love with the urban musician.
Thalisa, who disclosed that the artist was cheating on her with a string of girlfriends, said: “I still love him and I loved him from the very first day I met him. I will always love him and I wish him well in life, and pray that the next woman should love him same.”
She however expressed concern with the process of the divorce .
“ I was not allowed to counter-argue especially on property sharing because I invested a lot in this marriage including his music career,” Thalisa.
Thalisa wondered how they will share the matrimonial property when most of the items were inherited from her deceased parents.
“I spent my business money amounting to K800, 000 on his album Cousin DVD. And the only items we bought while together are, a TV screen and fridge, the rest is what I inherited from my late parents. How can we share such property? And the court was not considerate on my intention to recover my money.
“I have gone through hell; he beats me and has a string of girlfriends including a sugar Mamie who has promised to sponsor his ‘So What’ DVD. He likes to save his girlfriends in the phone book under other music artists’ names. A certain girl ‘s name was saved as Tay-Grin, another one Cos Chiwalo, Katelele Ching’oma and many more”.
She added: “He takes his phone everywhere including bathroom and toilet. Whenever I asked him about the girlfriends, he argues that they are his fans and that are the reason why we are surviving. He is quiet but abusive. He likes to flirts on social media with different girls.”
Thalisa further disclosed to have helped co-writing some of the Lufani’s songs including the smash-hit ‘Uhule ndi Mtima’. Thalisa was featured in videos of Mphete and Kangaude.
Dan Lu with five albums to his credit including popular No size and latest So What and Thalisa got married on May 7, 2009 and have no children. They have been living together at Chatha in Chileka.
