Malawi Police arrest couple for forcing their daughter into early marriage

Malawi Police in Mangochi the lakeshore district in southern region have arrested a couple for forcing their 16-year-old daughter into early marriage.

Girl forced into early marriage

Mangochi deputy police spokesperson Sergeant Amina Tepani Daudi says the couple Twaha Umar (58) and Esnart James (43) made marriage arrangements for with 24-year-old man Saidi Upile  last month without the girl’s consent.

“After being informed the girl rejected saying she wanted to complete her studies. But this did not please her parents who completed the marriage formalities without her consent.”

Daudi said few days later the parents chased their daughter  from their home and forced her to stay with the man.

“After two days of slavery marriage with the “suitor”, the girl fled back to her parents who again kicked her out of the house.  As a result, she kept on loitering around the village as she had nowhere else to go and later she disclosed her plight to members of Community policing forum in the area who reported the matter to Namwera police post”

Two marriage counselors Mustafa Salala (25) and Silaj Wyson(38) were also arrested.

All the suspects hail from the area of Traditional Authority Jalasi and will appear before court for contravening section 81(a) of Child care, protection and justice Act.
