Malawi Police bust theft racket in Blantyre

Malawi Police Services  have busted into a ghost credit lending institution, which has been swindling residennts in Kabula townships thousands of.

Both Police and Member of Parliament for the area Felix Njawala confirmed to Nyasa Times in separate interviews while disclosing that currently owners of the institution, African Relief Rock are on the run.

The police have since arrested several workers at the institution which was collecting money from people on the promise to offer them jobs or monitory loans.

“I got a complaint that there are some people who have setup a ghost company which was going around collecting money from people in my area while promising jobs or loans. When I went to their office on Wednesday, which is in Chemusa, they could not clearly explain the nature of their business that’s when I tipped the police who later busted into the institution but unfortunately the responsible people fled,” Njawala explained.

According to Kabula police unit, a warrant of search to hunt the company’s country director, manager and other executive officers has been obtained. The police have since kept a tight lid on the details of the fugitives.

“The workers we arrested are still in custody waiting for the arrest of their bosses. As of now we have closed down their offices and there is a warrant to search and hunt for them. We cannot disclose their details and names for fear of jeopardising our investigation,” explained one of the officers at Kabula Police unit.

The officer disclosed that the company was demanding K5, 000 as processing fee and additional K1, 000 for ID for every individual applying for jobs while those seeking loans were asked to pay K10, 000 as processing fee and K1, 000 for identification card.

“It’s not known how much they have collected from the victims so far, but its thousands of Kwachas. We are currently on hunt for them. They don’t answer their phones every time we call them, which is admission of guilt,” added the officer.
