Malawi Police IG  promises to probe all political violence

Inspector General  (IG) of Malawi police Rodney Jose has promised  political party leaders that the law enforcers would investigate all political violence leading up to May 21 2019 Tripartite elections.

Malawi police IG Jose: Tame the youth party zealots

Jose made the promise on Thursday in Lilongwe when he met political party representatives under the Centre for Multiparty Democracy.

“We will ensure that all political violence is investigated and come to a conclusion,” said Jose, calming the situation down as opposition leaders were up against the chief cop for his failure to order the investigations and make conclusions to the ever political violence blamed mostly on the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

“Sometimes there are delays because we do not have the leads, people should always come forward to give us hints and clues on the political violence, on perpetrators of political violence,” he said.

Jose said sometimes the police fail to deal with party zealots because of the power they wield.

“I recall one incident when one officer, a commissioner [pf police level] for that matter, was attacked while in uniform and in broad dalylight at a political party function in the North,” said Jose.

Chairman of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) KhwauliMsiska (DPP) said political parties should desist from using young people for political violence.

“We want the young people in political parties to be responsible, they should promote democracy,” he said.

The opposition political party representatives accused the police of failure to act on political violence perpetrated by the DPP as the president of the party Peter Mutharika is also the commander in chief of the armed forces which include the police.

The police are yet to investigate the beating of a Times photographer and harassment of members of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) during the state of the nation address by Mutharika at parliament building in Lilongwe.

The photographer and the UTM members were roughed up by the DPP cadets, the youth wing of the ruling party.

The DPP cadets are also blamed for the torching of two vehicles in Mangochi, one belonging to the UTM and another one belonging to a member of parliament who belongs to the movement.

Recently, the cadets were also blamed for the torching of the offices of human rights activist Timothy Mtambo in Lilongwe.

I predict tough situation a head of you the chief cop if you dont condon the violence that is being championed by the dpp party and bring the perpetrators to book, the situation is already volatile right now it is building up within, its getting tense very soon it will exprored if you dont calm the situation down because I know Malawians they reacts if the situation gets out of hand. They are peaceful loving people but when provoked they can get nasty right now they are already fed up with dpp government and yet the dpp provokes them delibately… Read more »

Political violence has been order of the day since 1994 with hundreds of investigations commissioned. The Police is so compromised that no political violence yields anything at all. It’s really a shame on the Police and it’s credibility. The Police is no no longer no – partisan but instead favours political party of the day. I don’t know how the Commissioner sleeps everyday knowing that he’s not living the oath he took.
