A parent to an 18-year-old student at Bvumbwe in Thyolo whose beating by police caused mayhem in the area, has said her child has now mental illness and accused the police of beating him in the head.

Beatrice Shumbe said her child FlavourFrackson is now suffering from mental illness since the police allegedly beat him up mercilessly in the head a few weeks ago.

“The police beat him severely in the head and this affected his brain. This is why he is behaving strangely and violently like this. My child was never like this, he was a good boy, he was a student but now he cannot go to school,” said Shumbe.

Hospital officials at Thyolo District Hospital where Frackson was referred after his bizarre behavior following the alleged beating refused to comment on the matter, saying health issues are private.

Shumbe said she would be seeking medical and legal help for her son.

Police arrested over 30 people in connection with the violence which erupted after Frackson was detained following his decision to ride a bicycle at a road block which is erected on M1 road at Bvumbwe police station.

Angry people damaged the police station in anger after they learnt that the student was severely beaten by the police.
