Malawi Police prosecutor arrested for corruption

A  public prosecutor , Elland Kanyika , was arrested in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe for allegations that he solicited bribes from a crime suspect.

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said it arrested Kanyika, a  Police prosecutor on October 3 on suspicion that he demanded money from  robbery suspect Yokoniya Magombo to pervet justice in his case.

“On 18th July, 2011, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that police prosecutor Elland Kanyika of Lilongwe Police Station demanded money from Yokoniya Magombo so that the prosecutor offers no evidence on charges of robbery against Magombo’,” said ACB’s Senior Public Relations Officer, Egrita Ndala in a statement.

Ndala said the bureau conducted investigation which confirmed the allegation.

“He was taken to Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded not guilty to two counts of corrupt practices by public officer contrary to Section 24 (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act,” said Ndala.

She said the suspect has been released on bail after he deposited K5, 000 cash and produced one reliable surety bonded at K30, 000 not cash.

The court has also imposed a bail condition that Kanyika should not leave Lilongwe without the authority of the Director of ACB.

The suspect will appear in Court on 2nd November, 2012 for continuation of trial.
