Malawi Police search Kasambara’s house

Security forces on Wednesday went to Chichiri Prison in Blantyre to collect a leading lawyer in private practice Ralph Kasambara to take him to his house for a search.

Kasambara refused to accompany the police and they agreed to go ahead without him.

According to a police source, the search warrant was issued by Magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa Usiwa.

Kasambara, the former Attorney General, was arrested on Monday after his guards apprehended suspected regime thugs who were to unleash a petrol bomb at his office.

Kasambara: Facing persecution

Lawyers Wapona Kita and Lusungu Gondwe – from Kasambara’s law firm, Ralph and Arnolds –  on Tuesday appeared before Blantyre Chief Resident Magistrate Innocent Nebi to make the bail application which  was granted by police could  not release him.

“Police have chosen to defy the court order as of now. Was with the head of CID and she says her team is right now at our offices and Ralph’s home doing the searche,” Kita wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday morning.

Kasambara spent Monday night at the Blantyre Police Station but was later transferred to Chichiri Prison in the same city on Tuesday.

The lawyer, who has been critical to President Bingu wa Mutharika administration and also helps the cuase of human rights camapigners, said after quizzing the five thugs, they confessed being sent by the regime  to harm him. However, police arrested him when he reported the incident.

Information Minister Patricia Kaliati, who denied that the alleged gang were sent by government, accused Kasambara of kidnapping and torturing the suspects.

Meanwhile, vocal human rights campaigner Undule Mwakasungula  has said the arrest of  was just one of the many examples of such attacks aimed at silencing the activists

“We are very much concerned and condemn the arrest of Ralph. We call upon government to release him unconditionally,” said Mwakasungula.

He, however, said despite such threats and intimidation the activists are not going to stop the struggle to ensure good governance in the country..
