Police in Lilongwe during the night of December 9 shot dead one person and arrested two of the deceased’s accomplices charged with robbery with violence.

The incident happened within Area 49 in the city, according to Kanengo Police Relations Officer,  Salome Chibwana.

Chibwana , identified the deceased as Joseph Chiphwanya Njoka (age and district of origin not known) and the others as George Soko, 33, from Lumbadzi, Traditional Authority (T/A) Nkukula in Dowa and Henry Mlewa, 27, from the same area.

She alleged that the deceased and two suspects who were currently in custody were some of the people who were operating in groups breaking into houses at night.

“On the said date, they broke into a woman’s house in Area 49,” Chibwana said, adding that the suspects ran away after stealing goods worth an undisclosed sum of money.

She said police confronted the three after well-wishers tipped them about the place where the suspects were residing.

“Police together with the Criminal Investigation Department and people in the community went to their home where they found them and in the process, the suspects started running away.

“This forced the police to shoot in the air to scare them. A stray bullet hit the deceased on his leg,” said Chibwana.

She said a postmortem conducted at Area 25 clinic revealed that the deceased died due to loss of blood.

According to Chibwana, police recovered goods such as decoders, DVD players and TV screens, among others, from the suspects’ home.

She said the two suspects would appear before court soon to answer charges of robbery with violence.-Mana

The police must have been extremely lucky to catch them. At a function on Saturday afternoon where we paid for six officers to patrol for security, at least 2 cars were broken into while the officers just sat under a a tree chatting and drinking lots of fanta.
