Malawi pollster vacates court injunction by-election

Pollster, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has vacated a court injunction obtained by a former ward councillor in Bembeke stopping a local government by election from going ahead following the conviction of the former councillor.

This means the by-election would go ahead on November 1.

Deputy public relations officer for MEC Richard Mveriwa confirmed the pollster has resumed preparations for the byelection in Bembeke after the court removed the injunction.

MEC launched the campaign for the poll in Bembeke on Monday and on Tuesday, the former ward councillor Davie Lingalawe obtained the injunction and on Wednesday, MEC removed the injunction.

Lingalawe was convicted of tampering with Escom prepaid meter so that he could not be paying electricity bills.
