Malawi Prison chief found dead: 'Cardiac arrest'
Malawi’s Chief Commissioner of Prison Services Macdonald Chaona has been found dead at his home in Zomba.
His death is a suspected heart attack.
“He died peacefully in his sleep at home in Zomba Friday night,” said Prison Spokesperson, Evance Phiri.
According to prison spokesman, Chaona’s body has been taken to Malawi’s College of Medicine in Blantyre where Pathologist Charles Dzamalala will conduct an autopsy.
Chaona on Friday led senior prison officers in paying last respect to late President Bingu wa Mutharika at Sanjika Palace.
He marched with fitness to give Mutharika the salute of honour .
Aged 58, Chaona joined the Prison Saervice in 1972.
He climbed the steps until he was promoted in 2005 to become chief commissioner.
