Malawi Queens getting ready for Diamond Championship

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has released an 18-lady squad for Malawi Queens scheduled to start camp training  at Blantyre Youth Centre in Blantyre in readiness of the Diamond Championship to take place in South Africa.

The Diamond Championship, which kicks off from August 11-19 in the rainbow nation will be  participated by the top four African netball teams which as of now are Malawi, South Africa, Botswana and Tanzania.

In the squad, NAM  has selected six shooters, five attackers and seven defenders.

The squad is comprised of both new and old faces with the likes of Beatrice Nkolyo for Mimosa and Merenia Gedion for Mafco Sisters as new comers.

Merenia and Nkolongo were outstanding in the just ended Presidential Netball Cup.

On the shooting department, Nam has left the mantle to net baskets in the hands of Australian based Mwayi ‘ Kumwenda, Bingu Tigresses slippery Sindi Simutowe, Jenny Chimaliro, Jessica ‘Agogo’ Mazengera, Joyce Mvula and Jessica Chikooka.

On the attacking role, there is Beatrice Kadango, Tina Kamzati, Bridget Kumwenda, Thandi Galeta and Stella Kamanga while in defence Grace ‘Pincord’ Mhango, Lauren Ngwira, Caroline ‘Ayuda’ Ngwira, Towera ‘Tobe’ Vinkhumbo, Joanna Kachilika, Merenia Gedion and Beatrice Nkolongo will be responsible in stopping their opponent to notch in baskets.

Malawi Queens coach; Griffin ‘Zagalo’ Saenda described the squad as one of the best, as it is comprised of young and upcoming players.

“This is the same squad which won us a cup in Tanzania. There are only a few players like Merenia, who have been called for this camp and l must admit having watched her during the Presidential Cup tournament, the girl is talented,” said Saenda.

Saenda, who bemoaned lack of many trophies for netball, urged Malawians to support the team as they did it when it was preparing for the Africa Championship which took place in Tanzania.

He said with only two cups for netball teams in the country, there was need for Malawi Queens to be engaged in many friendly matches to keep the girls physically fit.

Malawi netball only has the Presidential Netball Cup which is sponsored by the government and the OG Issa Southern Netball League, which is been bankrolled by OG Issa and Group Companies.
