Malawi R&B star Lulu to perform in South Africa

Malawi’s R&B singer, Lawrence Khwisa, better known by his stage name Lulu, is at the end of this month expected to perform in Cape Town, South Africa.

Scheduled to take place on 29th September, the show, which has been organised by Malawians based in RSA, will be held at Obz Lounge in Observatory, Cape Town.

In separate interviews with Nyasa Times over the weekend, both Lulu and the organisers confirmed he had accepted an invitation to perform in the rainbow country.

“Yes Lulu is coming to perform here in Cape Town after people here asked us to bring him,” said Irack Ngwira of Ghetto Street Entertainment.

Lulu: I have to show the world what I got

Ngwira, who is popularly known as Racks in the entertainment industry, added: “It’s not us who chooses who to bring, we do it for the people and they asked for Lulu.”

Lulu, who is also a songwriter, producer and dancer, based in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe, where he runs his Mathumela Studio, said he was delighted to be invited to perform in Cape Town where the music industry is very competitive.

“It’s a great chance to me because it is trips like these that I learn a lot as a producer, jazz guitarist and Lulu the singer. I know Cape Town in a jazzy way, I believe I’ll have a chance to meet a couple of guys and talk about music,” he said.

Added the ‘Magwiragwira’ star: “I don’t take this for granted, I know that most of the people there left me way back when I was still young on stage, but now is the time to show them my dream came true.”

This will be his second performance in South Africa, following his previous show last December when he performed in Johannesburg and Durban.

Lulu, who many people have described as one of the best musicians on the Malawian music scene, came in the limelight in the early 2000s when he released his pioneering R&B song ‘Magwiragwira’.

“I have always wanted my music to be music, not pop not R&B not reggae but music; however my blood pushes me to R&B and Jazz.

“Now that I have my band Mathumela, I have done a lot of home work to be an artist, now I feel I have to show the world what I got,” said the artist who often works with legendary Lucius Banda on tours.

With three albums on his laps, the multitalented artist has also worked in many studios as a producer and session artist. He has produced for a lot of local musicians including Lucius Banda, Mlaka Maliro, Skeffa Chimoto, Rejected and Dan Lu, just to mention a few.

His albums include ‘Mbambande’ (2003), ‘Kumalembe’ (2008) as well as ‘Sindilora’ (2011) and his other popular songs are ‘Magwiragwira’, ‘Tsogolo’, ‘Palibe Bvuto’ and ‘Mwachenjera Darling’. He is currently working on a new album.

In Africa, Lulu has also performed in Zambia and Mozambique, while in Europe he has been to England, Scotland and Norway.
