Malawi records 2 new Covid-19 patients, cases rise to 36

Minister of Health Jappie Mhango has said on Monday that Malawi now has 36 cases of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) global pandemic following the confirmation of two new cases, one in Blantyre and the other in the hotspot Lilongwe.

Minister of Health Jappie Mhango: The number of Covid-9 cases in Malawi has now risen to 36 after two more people have tested positive

Briefing the media in Lilongwe, Minister Mhango said since the last reported third death to the virus pandemic none has occurred again but that cases are sharply rising.

Mhango said following the confirmation of a new case at Mpata in Karonga District on Sunday, they have recorded two new cases of Covid-19.

“One case is a 47-year-old man from Chileka, Blantyre who arrived in Malawi from Tanzania and was on self-quarantine. The patient has no symptoms at present,” said Mhango.

“Another one is a 45-year-old man from Area 2, Livimbo, Lilongwe. He has no history of travel, he developed flue like symptoms and family member called our rapid response team for tests and results came out positive,” he added.

The minister said Ministry of Health team is this Monday going to take samples from other family members.

“We will do contact tracing to all workers at his business premises and other close contacts,” he said.

Mhango said currently the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases is 36, including 3 deaths and 4 recoveries

“The remaining 29 cases are all clinically stable with mild symptoms; some have no symptoms,” he said.

He said Mzuzu Lab had 34 samples where 1 case came out positive, 31 negatives and 2 are pending results

Lilongwe is the epicentre of Covid-19 in the country with 23 cases followed by Blantyre with nine while Chikwawa, Nkhotakota, Zomba and Karonga have one case each.

Mhango appealed to Malawians to continue enforcing measures that government put in place as a way of containing its spread.”

He  said some of the precautionary measures include hand washing with soap, social/physical distancing and limited travel.

And after the presser, money into the minister’s account. Time to feast, then call for a lock down on poor Malawians so that those spared by the virus should face hunger. Nowhere to hide.

So the man from Chileka has no covid symptoms but he has tested positive…..ok.

So why was he tested in the first place if he was not showing symptoms?…….does Malawi have enough test kits that you have now started testing everyone?

Or is this man another victim of scare mongering covid19 statistics?

So with these sky-rocketing numbers, I thought I might share what I have started noticing, particularly as today we have heard of another pure case of community transmission. I have started noticing a reports of deaths on relatively elderly folks rising. I have heard of two within the past week of whom we never heard of the cause but would likely have some cause probably old conditions . The only question i want health professionals to ask is are these cases not being worsened by the virus into mortality? Could health personnel be advised to apart from testing people suspected… Read more »

The problem is not Kenyatta, he as a judge just received a complaint against government’s decision to lockdown the nation without considering the privileged , so this was just something to discuss on how the government prepared to help those people who could only feed hand to mouth. I wish I was judge Kenyatta ndikanalamula Kuti lockdown ipangike as DPP government wish chifukwa palinso zambiri zimene zingaonetse kufooka kwa boma more especially anthu awa ovutikitsitsa amene saatha kupeza chakudya kwa 21 days. This Government,it will take time to talk sense things, the one doesn’t have the history of travel, does it mean that now flu is becoming Coronavirus? It is impossible Coronavirus can attack some one who is home and not being with someone who was tested positive no way! Flu has been there all along! Then if it is true, lockdown is meaningless! This 45 old man according to the Minister, he was home and he is home! Are we sure the kits we are using testing our own brothers and sisters are valid? I have not politicized this but am… Read more »

“History of travel” means he did not travel to a country or an area with known cases of coronavirus. What it means if a person gets it without a history of travel, is that there is a community spread. The virus is already spreading in that community. If you do contact tracing you would find someone in that community who had contact with a person who had a virus and is now spreading it. Without history of travel does not mean that the person was jut staying in their house.

Judge, Corona virus like many other conditions know no borders. This said, it means one can get it it from outside or within their own country. When we find a person who got it outside the country, it is called an imported case. When a case has no known outside travel, they call it a case of community transmission. Now I know we also have politicization of these discussions, one chooses how to look at these things depending on which side of politics they are sitting. When it comes to that I usually stand by the fence and just watch… Read more »

If COVID-19 is spread through droplets, then the first intervation should be masking. Some adverts does not even mention masking. Masking will prevent the virus into the air and also prevents inhalation of the virus from the air. I do not know if anyone is concerned to listen to the adverts on our media which some even ommit masking and only stress on hand washing. Please MOH stress masking as well as hand washing. Ndikunenakuti ngati Muthu akuvala ndi kupumira mask there will not be any virus in the air. The virus remains on the mask and in the mouth… Read more »

This is shallow thinking. Remember for over a month there was no case in Malawi despite the whole world having the disease. There was no agent to transmit it so there was no case. Once u have an agent epidemiologically speaking u definitely will find a case sooner or later. The same applies to the north. As long as there were no Covid 19 agent to pass the virus u cannot have a case. With the failure to contain the spread ny way of curfews it simply mens the virus has find it’s way to spread to areas komwe kulibe.… Read more »

We need to also be well educated on use of mask. As much as one uses mask and disposal is poor there will be no protection but rather spreading the virus. One puts on a mask for one week where does he/she keep it ,in the bag or pocket . We need proper education on these things. The same mask which may be contaminated outside can be a source of infection the one using it and others becoz of poor disposal.
