Malawi rejects being a ‘shithole’ country as African Union brands Trump shameful racist over remark
Malawi government has said ours is not a ‘shithole’ country, rejecting United States (US) President Donald Trump’s remarks calling African nations, Haiti and El Salvador ‘shitholes’.
Government spokesperson, who is also minister of Information and Communications Technology Nicholas Dausi, while he was coy to rebuke Trump, said Malawi is not a ‘shithole’ country and Africa is not a shithole continent.
Dausi could not comment on whether the US ambassador in Lilongwe had been summoned to clarify whether the nation was regarded as a “shithole” country amid global shock that such crude remarks could ever be made in a semi-public meeting by the president of America.
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation minister Dr Emmanuel Fabiano also felt aggrieved.
The US is Malawi’s largest bilateral donor that forks out at least $400 million annually into the country.
The country is also currently benefitting from US’s $350 million Millennium Challenge Account (MCC) investment to improve the energy sector. The ongoing five-year compact is designed to improve the power generation and transmission infrastructure. The compact closes in September this year.
However, Malawi has missed out on a second compact due to poor governance and failure to tame corruption.
Trump has since been branded a shocking and shameful racist after it was credibly reported he had described African nations, as well as Haiti and El Salvador as “shitholes” and questioned why so many of their citizens had ever been permitted to enter America.
The 55-nation African Union said the remarks were “clearly racist”.
Botswana’s government was the first on the continent to condemn Trump’s statements, referring to them as “highly irresponsible, reprehensible and racist.
Boniface Mwangi, a well-known social activist in Kenya called on Trump to distinguish Africans from the continent’s political leaders.
“Please don’t confuse the #shithole leaders we Africans elect with our beautiful continent,” he tweeted.
Trump’s remarks were translated in China as ‘countries that suck’ and Greece’s Ta Nea paper settled on ‘thieving countries’.
But Trump didn’t specify which countries in Africa he was referring to.
In South Africa, officials from the government and opposition also expressed outrage.
In a strongly-worded statement, the UN said it was impossible to describe his remarks as anything other than racist, while the Vatican decried Trump’s words as “particularly harsh and offensive”.
Since taking office, Trump has barely mentioned Africa. The main action he has taken affecting the continent is to sharply reduce foreign aid.
But the US Embassy in Lilongwe through its public affairs officer Edward Monster played down any dramatic changes in the support the US government renders to Malawi.

In John 8:32 the Bible states-“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” What Trump has stated is the truth though painful. There is no sense in refuting what he has stated. Our African leaders should do some introspection and work on aspects that will change the life of citizenry in our respective countries. Trump has told us that we are naked and all we have to do is not argue with him but buy clothes to clothe ourselves. All what Dausi and many other silly African governments are doing is complete stupidity. Use the African Union to discuss the matter and decided to make life better for the countries our leaders are responsible for. Trump or China does not owe MALAWI AND OTHER SHITHOLE COUNTRIES ANYTHING.
It is time Africa gave Amerikkka and Europe the finger and work with China instead. Those white leaders are all openly racist and appeal to their fascist bigoted lazy white Christian base.
Plus, China won’t try to evangelize you like the white racists will. Come on China, give Trump and those lagging whites the finger.

i fully agree with American president Donald Trump’s statement, as a citizen of South Africa, i have to concur. These countries have never and will never get their ‘shit’ together. Whatever you build for them they will soon break down. As another benefit- they have never and will never develop long range intercontinental balistic missiles or any related nuclear power- so they will never be a threat to the USA- which means the US Army wont ever have to step in and destroy them, as they are doing a wonderfull job of destroying themselves. Look at Lagos, Mozambique, South-Africa, and most of Africa- the cities look like they have already been bombed-

Ladies and gentlemen,now is the time our leaders did soul searching and come up with a positive direction coupled with change of attitude in order to get the country up another level,better level,the west has over the years given us aid be it materially or financial,yet our behavior in as far as its use was concerned it was as if we a right to be getting assistance,its as if its there duty to give us aid day in day out,during the one party era aid was properly used taxpayers money was reasonably accounted for,stealing and corruption was not made obvious, now the donors have said enough. but since we failed to get the message they have decided to be raw. During the past fifteen years I have never heard during the budget session of Malawi parliament that so and so ministry used the budget prudently and had a surplus of which it has gone back to treasury,am to be corrected.
Trump was on point cos thats the term befitting African leaders. In their Octogenarian ages they r buy enriching themselves & their cronies wth corrupt means. This all at the expense of the common village. As such they are unable to create better economies for their. The truth hurts, & ours is no exception.

I have no issues with Trump. He has told us exactly what we are? For malawi Zuma told us the same thing. Instead of directing our anger atTrump we should direct that anger at our so called leaders who have reduced us to beggars and second class world citizens. Trump has just called a spade by its nameand not a big spoon. Zuma once called this country something close to what Trump has used but what did we do we vented our anger on Zuma defending our good for nothing leaders. We are too polite with our leaders despite reducing us to sorry sights. I for one would rather vent my anger at this bunch of thieves masquerading as our leaders than at Trump whose only crime is to tell us what we are really. There are reasons why we have been called shithole countries . The best we can do is to reflect on those reasons and find ways of addressing them other wise Trump has told us exactly what we are . Shameful to those African countries that sided with America in supporting Trump’s recognising of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. They smiles when the American Ambassador to the UN threw a party for what it called friends of America. Are they still smiling today after being branded shithole by the man they supported? This is why I feel Africa will never be independent in whatever way because our leaders are greedy. No wonder poverty is considered a crime.
