Malawi Revenue Authority raid ZTE over tax crimes: Chinese company in Lilongwe

The Malawi Revenue Authority has seized financial documents belonging to ZTE (MLVV) Limited and ZTE Corporation Lilongwe Limited over alleged offences of non-remittance of various domestic taxes.

The tax collecting body stormed the companies’ in question premises on suspicion of the offences of non-remittance of the taxes and seized some financial documents from the companies.

The operation was carried out following a tip that the companies were not remitting correct amounts of Value Added Tax (VAT), Income Tax, PAYE and Withholding Tax.

F urther investigations on the matter are currently underway and once completed, prosecution of all accused persons will follow accordingly, the tax body said.

Both ZTE (MLVV) Limited and ZTE Corporation Lilongwe Limited are owned by Mr. Liao Liang.

Meanwhile, five senior executives from the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) are in the country for a two-day mission to benchmark about tax compliance among ICT service providers.

The team comprises ZRA Director of IT Yakomba Yavwa; Legal Counsel Diana Bunting; Director Design and Monitoring Joseph Nonde; Domestic Taxes Project Manager Garikai Chinyemba and Executive Assistant to Commissioner General Laban Simbeye.

On Wednesday,  the ZRA officials met with MRA Commissioner General Mr Tom Gray Malata, the Deputy Commissioner General Mrs Roza Mbilizi, Director of ICT Mr Max Mlomba and Deputy Director Corporate Affairs Mr Steven Kapoloma.

The Zambian officials are also scheduled to meet with the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA).
