Malawi road accidents: Teenager dies in Mangochi, hunt for hit and run killer driver in Rumphi

A 15-year-old boy died on Wednesday after a car hit him at Kapyepye Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chimwala in Mangochi.

Mangochi Police Station spokesperson Rodrick Maida identified the deceased as Rajab Mwamadi.

He said on the fateful day, the Toyota Hilux pick-up registration BS 7422 driven by Geoffrey Nyabanga (38) was coming from Liwonde heading to Mangochi Boma.

“Upon arrival at Kapyepye Village, the vehicle hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road,” Maida said.

“As a result, the pedestrian sustained multiple head injuries, fractured both legs and died on the spot while the motor vehicle had its grill, bumper and bonnet damaged,” he added.

Post-mortem conducted at Mangochi District Hospital revealed that death was due to multiple head injuries, according to police.

Meanwhile, police in the district are advising drivers to avoid over-speeding.

Nyabanga comes from Mbemba Village, T/A Symon in Neno District.

Hit and run in Rumphi

Meanwhile,  Police in Rumphi have launched a man hunt for an unknown driver of the motor vehicle which claimed the life of a 41 year old man in the early hours of Tuesday.

Rumphi Police Station Officer, Charles Mpezeni, said the unknown motor vehicle which hit the deceased at Kakoloha Trading Centre near Mkombezi, is believed to have been going to Karonga.

“The unknown motor vehicle is believed to have been coming from Mzuzu heading for Karonga and upon reaching Kakoloha area, it hit down a male pedestrian,” Mpezeni said.

He added the pedestrian is believed to have been coming from the opposite direction, walking along the edge of the said motor vehicle’s nearside lane.

According to the police officer, the pedestrian died on the spot after sustaining multiple fractures on both legs. However, the driver did not stop and never reported the matter to police.

“Meanwhile, investigations are underway to trace the driver and the vehicle,” said the station officer.

The deceased has been identified by police as Rodgers Singini from Mzumbwa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwankhunikira in the district.
