Malawi ruling PP intelligence imposters cause havoc

The ruling People’s Party (PP) parallel intelligence wing has gone on rampage causing wreck in the country especially the capital city Lilongwe embarking on a door to door campaign soliciting money from business gurus, Malawians of Asian origin and senior government officials in the name of being intelligence officers who have the power to report directly to the Head of State Mrs. Joyce Banda.

The climax of it all being on Tuesday when one of the overzealous ‘PP intelligence officer’ Gerald Kampanikiza went all the way to impersonate the Secret Intelligence Services (SIS) Deputy Director in his quest to solicit personal money in a way of blackmail.

The development has irked directors and some senior intelligence officers who believe the action by party zealots would jeopardize the operations of the State secret service thereby compromising the security of the country in the process.

Information sourced by Nyasa Timesindicate that the one Gelard Kampanikiza who was PP’s interim National Deputy Director of Youth before the party held it convention but failed to claim the position and he together with other party’s youths were taken on board in the party’s intelligence system as a consolation.

Kampanikiza: Fake spy?

Kampanikiza served as People Progressive Movement (PPM) national youth director  and also previously served as deputy secretary general at Malawi Democratic Party; Secretary General for Young Politicians Union and that during the 2009 general elections he contested in Dedza south constituency against the opposition leader, John Tembo but  lost.

Kampanikiza together with fellow youths in PP have gone overboard impersonating and threatening senior government officers in the pretext of being intelligence officers.

A source from the Capital Hill who also happens to be a Principal Secretary revealed Nyasa Times that he was told by the party intelligence officer by the name of Kampanikiza that he is not doing his job well and stand the chances of being fired from government since he has all the privilege to report directly to the President.

“I was threatened because as you know intelligence issues are security matters and you may not know whether one is saying the truth or not. He asked me to give him money,” said the source which Nyasa Times is shielding for fear of jeorparding his job.

Another highly placed source from Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) said Kampanikiza and his colleagues were at it again at the airport when they wanted to force the Immigration Chief to authorize entry of some immigrants who the authorities could not clear because they had no right of abode.

The PP inherited the Secret Intelligence Services (SIS) that was instituted by the late former President Bingu wa Mutharika after the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) which was set by the Bakili Muluzi and United Democratic Front (UDF) led government was disbanded.

When contacted by this reporter, Kampanikiza vehemently refused to comment on the matter saying he is not aware of anything.

Police in Lilongwe said they have received complaints relating to “extortionists” from ruling PP members.

“It’s not only Kampanikiza, they are many, others are senior members,” said a police detective familiar with the matter.
