Malawi security on alert after Mozambique Islamists attacks
Government has said its security agents are on alert after Islamists attacks in Mozambique.
Home Affairs and Internal Security minister Cecilia Chazama said the government was monitoring the situation in northern Mozambique very closely.
“We are aware of the attacks on innocent people in some areas in northern Mozambique and we are monitoring the situation very closely,” said Chazama.
BBC reports that atleast 100 people, including a traditional leader, children and women have been hacked to death with most of the bodies beheaded.
The attacks are blamed on Islamists who call themselves al shabab.
The attacks in mineral and petrolium rich area in the northern Mozambique, has displaced 1000 people, threatening the security of neighbouring Malawi which has so far enjoyed peace with no Islamists activities.

Excellent work Hon Minister. Islam in Mozambique is causing controversy as the religion is flexing its political muscle. In 1996 Mozambique Parliament attempted to pass a bill to declare two days of Eid as public holidays. The Roman Catholic Church, Zionist Churches, Pentecostal Churches and other Christians objected to the holidays because of the controversy associated with Islam. Catholic Cardinal Dos Santos is reported to have argued that if they, Muslims, succeeded, they will impose other Islamic Laws that will affect the Christian faith and that later on the country will see Islamic fundamentalism emerging. Opposition RENAMO also objected to the holidays. The Christian Council urged the then President Chissano not to enact a law recognising the holidays. They suggested that Muslims should take the Ramadan Days and observe them as their own holidays.
Northern provinces of Mozambique are strongly Muslim especially coastal areas because of Arabic influence. Some areas in the interior of the northern provinces are strongly protestant or catholic but Protestants and Catholics are numerous in southern and central provinces. Most Muslims are Sunni but there are also Ismaili Muslims. However, Mozambican Muslims rarely identify themselves as Sunni or Shiite. The good news is that because of Maxist ideology, government in Mozambique does not recognise religious holidays. That explains the reason Christmas was declared a Family Holiday. Sadly, Muslims in Mozambique regard Sundays as Christian Holidays. The beheading of innocent people in northern Mozambique by Islamist calling themselves Al Shabab point to something sinister in the making.
There is total trust that Mozambican authorities will deal with the group very firmly as it is disturbing peace, calm, law and order. Mozambique has had enough of any war. It is time to rebuild the country after years of Civil War which ended after the Catholic Church in Rome brought FRELIMO and RENAMO combatants to a round table for peace negotiation.

This is why I fail to understand why up to now people are still using western propaganda to dent Islam. As you can see from your own explanation, it’s not about religion; it’s about resources. Those calling themselves Islamists are doing that just to dent Islam. Islam has been preaching peace all along. Whoever doing it may call themselves Muslims but that does not mean they are Muslim’s because Islam condom the killing of innocent people. In fact it preaches love. There are Christians out there brutally killing innocent people including Muslims, but you don’t comment. Why? If a Christian kills an innocent person, that doesn’t mean Christianity condons it. In this modern age, it is Muslims who still have penchant taste of killing non Muslims. Memories of Ethiopian Christians who were rounded up in Libya many months ago and beheaded on the Mediterranean Coast just because they were Christians are still fresh, and the incident was posted on Youtube for all to view. It was real. The Ethiopian Government later declared a day of national mourning. Their beheading follows what the Quran teaches you people. That is a fact. This is clearly spelt out in Quran 8:39. Look also at Quran 2:191 which says: “slay the unbelievers wherever you find them”. It is a command to people like you to do the needful. That is why when non Muslims join you institutions you always force them to convert or use other coerce tactics such as mattresses or plastic basins until he gave in. If he refuses, then he is given VIP treatment.
Those who are doing the killing are not denting Islam as you want us to believe. Rather they are following what is printed in black and white in the Holy Quran. Judging by your name, I doubt if you are truly a Muslim. However, I urge you to read the other Ayat in Holy Quran that talks about waging war on non Muslims, and they are over 22 passages pointing to that direction – war. Otherwise you comment is far from convincing in the presence of words such as “Make war on infidels living in your neighbourhood” as stated in Quran 9:123. you have said it well, but what is the connection between what you have said and our own security here? whatever happened between mozambique government and their faithful regarding Holidays that’s their own problems to sort out, when it comes to security issues i believe we have to be watchful because these alshabab guys will be in our own back yard and we need to be very alert when they try to put their foot on our soil. the Minister is right

That’s what happens when tribal/ religious fiefdoms become the norm in politics and governance of a nation. Especially where people clearly see that they are being sidelined &/ getting a raw deal. Coupled with the fact that those being elected into power are not necessarily extraordinary per say but are just having a numerical advantage in the voting process.
In Malawi if the North had a strong Islamic influence the Boko Halaam activities could have started already. The same disgruntledness is currently being experienced in central region. Probably the federal system proponents are not making wild claims after all.
The immigration should start deporting all illegal immigrants and be strict with people from Somalia. These Al Shabab infiltrate the country long before they launch their attack. In other words, they live among the local people, study them and organise themselves before they attack. They are a lot of illegal foreign nationals living among us. Some of them have opened shops, bars and other businesses. And you wonder how these people have settled amongst us. Where is the police? Where is the Immigration? It is time government started being serious in deporting illegal immigrants. It is very easy to do it.
Government should work with local chiefs (block leaders) in townships to identify foreign nationals living in their area. Foreign nationals should be reported to police and immigration who should come and check their papers. Those living illegally should be deported. Mind you, Al Shabab is an Islamic fundamentalist group. Their members do not care about dying. But we care about live. So the Department of Home Affairs and Internal Security should stop sleeping on the job. They should start now to flush out illegal immigrants. I like the vigilance of block leaders of Area 47 in Lilongwe who reported Nigerian drug dealers to Lilongwe. Everyone should be doing the same with illegal immigrants.
Also govt should sensitise the local people to report foreign nationals who come to live amongst them. Those without papers have to go the refugee camps or have them deported.
In fact, government should revise its immigration laws not to give a foreigner citizenship unless they stay in the country for 10 years and all security checks about the individual are undertaken. And these foreign citizens must be living in Malawi legally. Please do not give citizenship to investors. They are here for business and to become Malawians citizens.
What will happen if the foreigners have got valid papers well documented papers to stay in the country but are associated with AL SHABAB?I think the best way is to monitor the movement of all foreigners and their businesses.
Those associated with Al Shabab must deported as well even f they have valid papers. We do not want Islamic fundamentalist in Malawi. That is why even Donald Trump banned such people in the USA. So all illegal immigrants and those associated with Al Shabab MUST be deported.
The police, the Army and Immigration must stop being sleepy. They should start cleaning up our townships, cities and rural areas of all illegal immigrants and of course monitor people from Somalia and Kenya who might have links with Al Shabab
Its too late, they are already in our neighborhoods and are friends, they are just waiting for the right time to attack. Let’s just accept the weaknesses we have in our immigration laws and find ways of dealing with such kind of attacks suppose they are about to happen or they happen. its just a group of people fully funded by some organizations just to bring chaos and instability to various countries, they have a very strong network and funding. For sure we have let a lot of these north Africans coming in into our country. Al-Shabab is a grouping in Somalia, infact its establishment will leave you speechless because the ones that started the grouping its not the moslems (the writings are on the wall – just find out ),even Trump during his campaigns was telling his supporters who created Al-Shabab, just follow his campaign speeches if one wishes. what interest do the Al-Shabab have in Mozambique? We need to watch our Malawi jelously indeed. We should never ever have any stupid ideologies of such nature and kind. This madness may cross the borders if we as Malawians are not careful and watchful. We need to watch all those sectors of our society that might be attracted to such behaviours and give them the signal that they will not be entertained here. We also need to start working on our law against such nasty ideologies and beliefs. Malawi will never allow such sick headed ideologies!
