Malawi star Gerald Phiri Jnr release at Platinum puzzles fans
Malawian national football team star Gerald Phiri Jr’s release at Platinum Stars has been roundly criticised due to his impeccable form while on a season long loan from Bidvest Wits.
“Platinum Stars have opted against signing Gerald Phiri Jr on a permanent basis. The Malawian spent last season on loan at Stars from Bidvest,” states Kickoff.
Kickoff quoted the team’s general manager Senzo Mazingiza who confirmed saying “he is no longer with us.”
But football fan reacted to the development by faulting Platinum for failing to offer him a permanent deal.
“I don’t think there is any right wing back better than him there. Phiri Jr is a good player Dikwena should have signed permanently,” said the fan.
But his return has put his future in doubts after Bidvest who also have Malawian star striker Gabadinho Mhango on the books.
“He featured under former Dikwena coach Calvin Johnson but faces stern competition at Wits bolstered their midfield options with big name signings Steve Pienaar and Daylon Classes,” Kickoff reported.
Phiri Jr scored an important goal for Malawi national football team’s 1-0 win over Comoros in the Africa Cup of Nations group qualifying match at Bingu National Stadium in June to start the campaign on a promising note.
