Malawi student, 16 held for killing her baby: Mercy Mphanje

Police in Malawi’s old capital, Zomba, are keeping custody d a 16-year-old secondary school student on suspicion that she aborted and killed her baby.

Eastern Region Police Spokesperson Sub Inspector Thomeck Nyaude confirmed the development on Tuesday, saying the girl, a student at Zomba Police Secondary School it is suspected to have aborted a six-month-old pregnancy.

The suspect Mercy Mphanje was arrested on Monday but her name has been shielded.

Nyaude — relying on a medical report from Zomba Central Hospital –said the teen girl is suspected to have taken some traditional medicine to abort the pregnancy.

Nyaude said the body of the aborted baby who was wrapped with clothes was found by other students who wanted to do some laundry.

Meanwhile, Nyaude says the matter is still being investigated and the girl will appear before court soon to answer charges of murder.

Mphanje hails from Savala Village in the area Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo district.

Police have since asked women who are not ready to have children to desist from premarital sex or use contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
