According to Nsanje Police Publicist Samson Balakasi said Margaret Donda died of several body burns which were examined by Kalemba Rural hospital.

Before committing self-immolation, the teacher who was living with two maidens after a long separation with her husband, told one of her maids Violet Pheneya that she wanted to burn some pieces of paper when the latter had questioned her move.

“Violet tried to reason with her that she should bring out the paper out but the deceased denied,” said Balakasi.

He explained that after the deceased‘s denial the maid went into the bathing room to bath.

“Barely a few minutes she (Violet) heard a heavy cry from the bedroom which was full of smoke with closed door and windows,” added Balakasi.

Police spokesman also said people rushed to the house to open the door in an effort to put off the huge fire but in vain instead they broke the window to throw water.

Donda hailed from Nalunguwa village in Traditional Authority Nkumba in Phalombe district.
