Malawi teacher commits suicide after testing HIV positive

 

A primary school teacher at Mkonje primary school in Mzimba district Augustine Mahima 27 has committed suicide after testing HIV positive.

Mzimba police officer in charge Joseph Chambuluka confirmed the development in an interview on Thursday.

He said the deceased hails from Kapokolo village in the area of traditional authority M’Mbelwa in the district.

Chambuluka said the deceased committed suicide in his own bedroom on 5 March after coming from Mzimba district hospital where he tested  HIV positive.suicide-risk

“The  deceased went to Mzimba district hospital for diagnosis where he also under went HIV testing. Test results showed that he was HIV positive and he could not contain this status hence he committed suicide,”  said Chambuluka.

Chambuluka said postmortem results showed that the deceased died of suffocation due to strangulation.

In a related development, a 66 year old man Mackson Ngulube of William Ngwenya village hanged himself on 5 March after picking up a quarrel with his wife.

Ngulube was found hanging in a tree in a nearby bush.

Cases of suicide are on the increase in Mzimba and the police are urging all people to seek counsel and advice when they are faced with problems.
