Malawi teacher defiles, infects 13-yr-old girl with HIV

Police in Malawi’s Central district of Dowa are keeping in custody a Deputy Head teacher for Dowa 1 Primary School, Hastings Njati for being suspected of abducting and defiling a 13-year-old standard 6 school girl at his own school.

Officer-in-Charge for Dowa police station Ephraim Chipojola told Nyasa Times in a telephone interview that Njati was arrested on Wednesday after the girl’s parent, Francis Kapiza, had reported to the police that his daughter was missing.

“The suspect kept the girl at his house for a number of days where he was defiling her,” said Chipojola.

He also said Njati whose wife died due to what is believed to be an AIDS related disease, is also on life prolonging Anti-Retroviral drugs (ARVs).

“We are yet to charge him because we are waiting for the results from Dowa District Hospital on tests for HIV and sexual penetration as demanded by his father,” said Chipojola.

He however said the suspect is likely to be charged with defilement and abduction once the medical tests are out.
