Malawi tennis star gold dreams shattered

Malawi tennis star Chisomo Lumeta had his gold dream at the Africa Union Region Five Games being held in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe shattered after losing to South Africa’s opponent Kellerman 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in the final.

Lumeta, who is currently on scholarship in Morocco, lost the first set and recovered in the second set with a win to force the match to be decided in the third set but he lost 6-3.

The country’s tennis promising star however won silver for Malawi in the tournament.

Malawi also won bronze medal in athletics through Memory Ziba in 800m in 2 minutes 13 seconds 75 miliseconds by finishing on third position while Faith Labana managed the same distance on seventh position in 2:20:55.

In 500m Abina Tchinga, Leo Chikhwaza and Harry Sichali failed to finish in position positions and effectively denying Malawi medals.

In Paralympic Malawi also failed to win medals as athletes Prisca Kachule, grace Kabill and Gladys Chiwinja failed in T13 800m finishing 4th, 7th respectively.

In football Malawi Under-17 were held to a one-all draw by Swaziland. But the team top Group with seven points having won the first game against Angola 1-0 and came from behind to triumph over Mozambique 2-1.

In basketball Malawi has failed to impress having lost both games to Angola and South Africa.

The games are expected to finish to Saturday.
