Malawi to have oncology centrer to tame cancer – JB
The Government of Malawi and United States based Biotech Inc in partnership with GB Oncology and Imaging Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will result in having an oncology and infection disease Clinic at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.
President Joyce Banda signed on behalf of the Malawi Government while President and Managing Director of GB Oncology Imaging Group, Gloria Herndon signed on behalf of the two firms at a ceremony held at Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York in the United States on Tuesday, September 25, 2012.
QECH’s Oncologist Dr. Leo Masamba and officials from the two US firms witnessed the signing ceremony.
President Banda said the initiative was one way of reducing the scaring growing numbers of deaths of cancer in the southern African nation.
She expressed delight at the prospect of the clinic at the largest referral hospital in Malawi, saying her Government appreciates the joint efforts to improve access and delivery of clinical care to patients with cancer.
President Banda said that having a healthy population is essential for the development and stability of the nation.
Other engagements
President Banda and First Gentleman Richard Banda (the retired Chief Justice, SC), on Monday evening was among the star-studded guests at a reception hosted by US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
The reception is part of the engagements Heads of State are attending while in New York during the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly general debate.
President Banda also was in attendance when US President Barack Obama delivered his speech to the UN general assembly.
During the statement, President Obama commended the peaceful transition of power in Malawi.
