Malawi to rehabilitate Kamuzu Institute for Sports, youth centres: Bingu Stadium to open this year
Malawi government has pledged to rehabilitate one of oldest stadiums and Youth Centre Kamuzu Institute for Youth and Sports in Lilongwe and other youth centres in the southern region district of Thyolo and Mzuzu city.
President Peter Mutharika made the pledge on Wednesday 5th May, 2015 in his State of the Nation Address during the opening of the 4th meeting in the 45th session of Parliament and the 2015-2016 budget meeting in Lilongwe.
Mutharika also assured Malawians that the construction of the magnificent national Olympic stadium currently under construction in the capital city with funding from the Chinese government will be completed this year.
“Mr. Speaker, Sir, in the 2015/2016 financial year, Government will complete the construction of Bingu Stadium in Lilongwe and youth centres in Mzuzu and Thyolo. Government will also rehabilitate Kamuzu Institute for Youth in Lilongwe and Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre,” said Mutharika.
In 2012, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government under the leadership of late Bingu wa Mutharika took away the ownership of Kamuzu Institute for Youth and Sports from the Sports Council accusing the council of failing to run the facility.
It was however returned to sports council after it was again neglected by the government following the death of Mutharika.

Who eats stadiums? Will stadiums bring food on the table? Will Malawi host the World Cup? Useless projects. Why not use the money to build roads, power plants, build more jetties and put modern ferries on Lake Malawi?
