Malawi Union for the Blind seek more support in education for visually impaired

Malawi Union for the Blind (MUB) has asked government to train more teachers specialized in teaching visually impairment learners.

Executive Director for Malawi Union for Blind, Ezekiel Kumwenda

The remarks were made by Executive Director for Malawi Union for Blind, Ezekiel Kumwenda during the opening of a three days training for teachers from different schools in all regions of the country on repairing the tools for teaching learners with low vision.

He explained that it is important for government to train more specialized in vision impairment to reduce challenges that are been faced.

“Education is key to any development of the country, as MUB we are concerned that learners with visual impaired are encountering many challenges in cause of accessing education, their equipment is faulty and old,” Kumwenda pointed out.

Special Needs Desk Officer for Salima DEM, Henry Kalilani said Salima is doing well in terms of taking care of the learners with low vision impairment.

” Salima is doing well unlike other districts, this is so because the District Education Manager (DEM) put much effort in all aspects as we are given enough funding and we also do screaming exercise for standard eight unlike other district that are not well funded” he pointed out.

Kalilani pleaded with all DEMs to revisit their accountability and increase the amount of funding so that the learners can live happy life and get quality education.

One of the participants of the training who is a teacher for low vision impairment, Matthew Kaziyale said the training would help them to repair the machines in their school.

“This training will help us a lot to repair the machines own our own without waisting resources to find a technician so we will save alot and we are thanking the Malawi union of the blind for the blind for coming up with this training,” he added.

MUB is implementing the training with the funding from Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Association (KBTA).
