Malawi VP opens K80m multipurpose telecentre in Karonga

Government on Wednesday opened the K80 million-multipurpose telecentre which will help rural people have access to information, communication and technology (ICT) services at Lupaso in the area of paramount Chief Kyungu in Karonga.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice president Khumbo Kachali said it is the wish of government that information, technology and technology services should spread to all parts of the country.

The Vice President said the majority of people in the country live in rural areas and demand for efficient information gadgets for communicating easily.

“Information is a potential tool to change lives for the better and move people out of poverty,” he said.

Government has constructed Lupaso Telecentre with funding from Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA).

Kachali said farmers can use the LupasoTelecentre for connecting with customers who intended to buy their farm commodities including rice which many farmers grow in Karonga.

Speaking earlier Minister of Information and Civic Education Moses Kunkuyu said the establishment of telecentres in the country like the one at Lupaso was an ongoing process.

Kunkuyu said through the “Connect a Constituency Project” being implemented under the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, government will establish multipurpose community telecentres of various levels in all the 193 constituencies in the country.

Lupaso Telecentre will provide access to internet, computer training, photocopying, secretarial, and library services, among others.

“These services will make the community here at Lupaso and the surrounding villages to make contacts and stay in touch with the rest of the world,” Kunkuyu said.

The Minister, asked the community around the Lupaso Telecentre to take good care of the facility so that future generations could benefit as well.

Other people who spoke at the function included, Paramount Chief Kyungu and MACRA Board Chairperson, Martha Kwataine who also emphasized on the need for the community to make use of the facility.
