Malawi Womens football in Cosafa Group of Death: Drawn against Zimbabwe, Zambia and Madagascar

Malawi National Womens Football Team should expect tough opposition and need to tighten up their belts if they are to progress into the knockout stages of the 2017 Cosafa Womens Football Championship after being drawn into what can be described as a tightly contested and Group of Death.

The team has been drawn in Group A against defending champions Zimbabwe, neighbouring Zambia and Madagascar.

Group B comprises of Mauritius, Mozambique, Swaziland and guest nation Kenya while Namibia, Lesotho and three time winners South Africa are in Group C.

According to a draw held on Wednesday 23rd August 2017, the opening match will be a game involving Namibia and Botswana.

Malawi will play its first Group match the same day September 13th September against Zambia before Zimbabwe date Madagascar.

The next assignment will be on September 15 against Madagascar before winding up the group stage assignments on 17th against the host nation and defending champions Zimbabwe.

All Group A matches will be played at Barbourfields in Bulawayo while other matches will be played at Luveve Stadium.

Top teams together with runners up and best placed will face each other in a round of robbin format.

The semifinals are expected to be played on 24th September and thereafter the finals three days later while third place match will be on 23rd September 2017.

Zimbabwe and South Africa go into the tournament as favourites having won the cup in previous years.

South Africa won it in 2002, 2006 and 2008 while Zimbabwe were the champions for the last edition played on its home soil in 2011.
