Malawian girl commits suicide over refusal to visit a lover

An 18-year-old female student in Malawi’s eastern district of Balaka has killed herself by hanging at Pyoli village in the area of Sub Traditional Authority Kachenga in Balaka district after her parent criticised her tendency of sneaking to her boyfriend during the night.

Confirming the incident, Balaka Police spokesperson Sub Inspector Joseph Sauka said the deceased Francisca Ronthiwa was in form 3 at Mbera Community Day Secondary School.

“The girl was used to sneak out of the house during night time to her boy friend a development that had been annoying her parents who wanted her to concentrate on her education. A day before this fateful day, the deceased was cautioned by her father after she sneaked out of the house to her boy friend; and this did not please her,” says Sauka.suicide

Sauka says on 26th July, 2014 at around 17:00 hours, the deceased left her home after telling her relatives that she was not going far but never returned.  She was later found dead in a mango tree where she hanged herself using her silk chitenje (wrapper).

He says post-mortem conducted at Balaka District Hospital has revealed that death was caused due to suffocation.

The deceased was coming from Masikini village, Traditional Authority Likoswe in Chiradzulu district but was residing at Pyoli village in the area of Sub Traditional Authority Kachenga in Balaka district.

Meanwhile the police in the district are appealing to the members of general public not to resort to suicide when they are in problems but rather “seek proper advice from other offices and organisations.”
