Malawian model in Austria contest Face of Africa

Austria-based Malawian model, Nelson Matanga, is flying the Malawian flag is the European country as he made it into the finals of the Mr Face of Africa competition.

Matanga, who is studying tourism at the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg, is among the 15 Africans contesting for the finals of the competition to be held on 12 July.

Face of Africa Austria is a contest for Africans living in Austria with an aim of showcasing the African heritage and talents.

The competition is in two categories, male and female, and Matanga will be competition against contestants representing Cameroon, Congo, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

A Malawian who left the country for Austria in 2010, the year he won the Mr Malawi Institute of Tourism (MIT) title, said he was happy that he made it to the finals of the competition.

“I am excited because I know once I win this Malawi will also win,” said Matanga. “I want to use this platform to promote my heritage and market Malawi as a tourist destination.”

Speaking in an online interview from Austria, the 29-year-old said he was targeting some agencies in that country to lobby them to organize some visits to Malawi.

He mentioned the forthcoming Malawi Lake of Stars international arts festival, slated for September, as the target destination this summer.
