Malawians cannot continue to eat and drink feaces accompanied with water – Newspaper editorial

Malawians are not safe. The water they have been drinking is heavily contaminated with feaces and debris, findings of various studies carried in a local newspaper have revealed.

contaminated drinking water

According to study reports carried by The Nation daily newspaper on Thursday, majority of Malawians nationwide could be drinking water with high levels of faesal matter  and other  coil forms everyday.

The paper carried an editorial comment on the matter and noted that the problem could be worse in city peripherals such as Ndirande in Blantyre , Kauma in Lilongwe  and Chibavi in Mzuzu – whose inhabitants are languishing in abject poverty compared to the middle density Area 18 where, hitherto, ” we were meant to believe that sanitation and hygiene conditions are much better.”

The paper pointed out that there has been many years if “neglect and lackadaisical approach” to duty  by authorities putting lives of millions of Malawians in jeopardy.

“Malawians cannot continue to eat and drink feaces accompanied with water and other edibles. The long term effects are indeed dire as health and sanitation experts will attest. Let authorities responsible do something about this,” the newspaper editorial said.

In its lead story, paper  reports that  a review of various studies conducted in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu cities as well as some districts , shows that the feasal contamination is least a thousands  times  more than the level the World Health Organisation recommends  as safe for human consumption.

  1. …koma abale kumwa madzi oipa choncho mkumalipilanso modula? Area 18 residents why cant you join hands find a lawyer and drag these pipo to court to teach them a lesson? Osamapanga mantha ndi khothi ndi ndalama zimenezi amalekelela dala nde osamawasiya asanatapeko andale akanayamba kukupepesani inu nde aziba bwino! A cama akuti bwanji pamenepa kingoti ziii?

    1. Kkkkkkk amalawi onse ogomela kunenepa azikatunga madzi pa 18! Akazizila mfuliji sikukoma kwake ali zizizizi!

  2. Also in Liwonde the water is muddy I understand there’s a certain lodge which disposes its sewage into shire river please chech out this all those responsible

  3. We told you not to vote for DPP. Now you have to pay for your stubbornness by eating and drinking feces. This doesn’t happen anywhere in the world, and it’s the first time in Malawi, courtesy of the DPP govt. Next time, if you become tired of eating and drinking feces, VOTE WISELY. Some people learn the hard way, e.g. by first being fed on bibi before they wise up.

  4. Complete overhaul is the solution. we dont blame Gvt but workers. gvt should now make sure LWB handles this with urgency

    1. I would like to strongly ask Honorable Atulupele Muluzi, Dr Dan Namalika and Dr Charles Mwansambo to step into the problem currently happening at Area 18. While the immediate ill health of this situation can be diseases such as Cholera, the likelihood of having health problems of ill-health in the future among people who have been drinking this contaminated water is high. I suggest the ministry of health should engage Public Health experts and Epidemiologists to come up with a prospective study following the people who have been living in Area 18 for the next 20 years or even more and see any disease they can develop. This is how the responsible Ministry of Health should have already done, unfortunately, sometimes the people that we put in positions refuse to do the right job. I know there are such experts at Community Health Sciences Unit in Area 3 under the Directorate of Dr Stony Kabuluzi who are mandated to be doing such work, again most of the Officers at CHSU are only there for workshops. I need someone from the Ministry of Health to answer me whether they’re doing anything about this. This is not the problem of Lilongwe Water Board or Lilongwe City Assembly only but the Ministry of Health and the nation as well. In the area, we have many people who are contributing to the economic and social development of the country. All the 28 districts of Malawi are represented in Area 18 and let us not politicise this problem. It is not APM problem as the current Head of State or Chakwera because Area 18 is in the Central Region. Can we use money budgeted under the emergency budget line to address the problem in Area 18? Mr Vice President Have you visited Area 18 to understand the magnitude of the problem out there. This problem is more than floods of Nsanje. Honorable Bisnowarty what have you done to support our friends in Area 18 instead of teaming with Dr Ntaba milking the Central Medical Stores Trust. Mr Speaker this is an issue that calls for an emergency session of Parliament. Civil Society Organizations what have you done apart from organizing a demonstration. Wake up Malawi, Area has future leaders of our country
