Malawians in UK set for Independence Day celebrations: Kelly Kay, Namadingo promise thrills in Leeds

Malawi’s hip-hop top artist Kell Kay, real name Kelly Kambwiri, and marverick gospel artist Patience Namadingo have said they will give their best performances during the 55th Malawi independence celebration in Leeds, England to be held on Saturday July 6.

The artists will share the stage when they are billed to  perform at the dinner and dance of the celebrations  to be held at  Elland Road, Leeds United Football stadium (Norman Hunter Suite) from 18:00 -00:30.

“I am looking forward to give my best at the celebrations. Malawians should expect a good show,” said Kell Kay who is already in England.

Namadingo, the award-winning artist, recorded a video message on his departure from Malawi confirming he will be in United Kingdom to perform at the Leeds celebrations.

“It is going to be a good show,” he promised.

The artist was scheduled to arrive in UK at the time of posting the article.

Music will be provided Manchester-based DJ Forbes.

The organisation Malawi Leeds Association(MLA) said there will be a series of free family events taking place concurrently through out the day where all Malawians and other nationalities are welcome to attend.

Both  Patrick Taulo and Howard Sichinga from Malawi Leeds Association confirmed to Nyasa Times that  independence celebrations will start with a football tournament involving Malawian teams from UK at South Leeds stadium (also known as John Charles Sports Centre) Full Astro pitch in the morning (post code (LS11 5DJ).

Winners will be presented with a trophy which will be translated into a cash prize.

Kids will also have their own room within the premises with jumping castles and a DJ who will be dishing out music.

They have also organised independence prayers to take place at the same John Charles Sports Centre in the Grand suite from 12:00 which will be hosted by Pastor Edgar Chibaka of All Nations Community Church in Leeds.

A number of community leaders from a mix of faith groups will be praying for Malawi to continue to have peace, prosperity and progress.

The day events are free for all with refreshments provided.

In the evening of the same day from 18:00pm -00:30AM there will be a red carpet dinner and dance taking place at Leeds United Football Stadium, Elland Road (LS11 0ES).

“We are treating our guests with a free drinks reception for the first hour of the event. There will be a 3 course meal and children meals afterwards. It is very important that our guests arrive on time,” organisers said.

This years independence theme is celebrating ‘freedom, with peace, unity and love.’

Organisers strongly advices for advance booking to attend the evening event  which has received  sponsorship  from  international remittance service provider  Mukuru (www.mukuru.com), 14 Trees and Lafarge Affordable Building Limited (www.smartdiaspora.com) and Leeds-based security firm  First Response Group (www.firstresponsegroup.com).
