Malawi car importers and traders to access goods at Mbeya Port: Distance to be reduced by 900 km

Malawi car importers and other traders will no longer have to travel to Dar es Salaam to access their goods as the Tanzanian Government is making an initiative to improve Mbeya Cargo Dry Port to cut the distance short.

Car importers and traders travel about 1,000 kilometers from Lilongwe to Dar es Salaam to receive their goods and other export services while from Lilongwe to Mbeya City, it is 565 kilometers.

Senior Customs Officer at Kasumulu Border, Majaliwa Ndukutu, revealed the initiative on the sidelines of a visit by Tanzania Commissioner to Malawi last week.

Ndukutu said the Tanzanian Government would soon improve Mbeya Port to allow some goods from Dar es Salaam to be accessed there.

Car importers and traders travel about 1,000 kilometers from Lilongwe to Dar es Salaam to receive their goods and other export services while from Lilongwe to Mbeya City, it is 565 kilometers.

Commenting on the initiative, Tanzania Commissioner to Malawi, Benedicto Martin Mashimba said the development will help the traders to save money.

“Business is about making profits and people used to travel a long distance to reach Dar es Salaam which was very expensive on their part.

“Once the Mbeya Cargo Dry Port is done, it will help the people to save money and make profits because Mbeya will be closer than Dar es Salaam,” said Mashimba.

District Commissioner for Karonga, Emmanuel Bulukutu commended the Mbeya Cargo Initiative, saying it will be cost-effective to traders.

  1. So, it was so hard for you to do simple calculations on distance? Check your articles please. Are these articles edited in any way? I wonder!

  2. While Tanzania government is developing and creating more jobs and reducing poverty depth (from 28% in 2011 to 26% in 2018) for their own people, Malawi government is busy digging the poverty pit for its own people. NOCMA is giving fuel transportation contracts to Tanzanians ignoring Malawian transporters, most of Malawian transporters are now closing businesses. Malawian jobs are being lost due to some very few greedy people at NOCMA and MERA who are getting bribes from Tanzanians. Hard earned forex is going to Tanzania. What a shame of a government – ignoring the basic principles of economics. Koma nkhaza zili ndi few Malawians – people just don’t learn. The tables will turn one day. DPP/NOCMA/MERA/APM whatever goes up, it will one day come down. You cannot just be oppressing people.

  3. Get your distances right, reporter. Nthawi yowerengetsera ma disttance ndi yomwe ija mumataya kuyamikira mabooty ija

    1. Actually you are right. The distance from Lilongwe to karonga is 576km. How can the distance to Mbeya from Lilongwe be 565km?

  4. No difference! We just say Tanzanians will !make extra monies for moving our goods from Dar to Mbeya.Tanzania is creating more jobs for their people not Chinese as Malawi does.

    1. True, while Tanzanian government is creating jobs for their own people, Malawian Government under the auspices of NOCMA is taking away Malawian jobs and forex and giving them to Tanzanians in fuel transportation. What a daft government Malawi is. Malawi is a failed state!

  5. How possible is it that from Lilongwe to mbeya is 565 kms?how? What’s the distance btn Lilongwe and Mzuzu?Mzuzuz to karonga.
Teach me guys about the distance otherwise am happy with the development

  6. Something is happening over there not zaife. Kumangokhalira Kulankhula basi. I will turn malawi into Europe. I will turn malawi into singapore while on the ground nothing is happening that points to singapore direction let alone Zambia direction. A country in total decay is what we have now. Look at Nkhota jetty, chilumba, chipoka and monkey bay. Total decay. Waste of time and space is what mutharika is. Take it or leave it, the truth has to be told.

    1. Lets have personal guns mwina angamasiyeko zotinamiza izi..chifukwa we are taken for granted Malawians

    2. How can this be good news as if transportation costs from Dar-es-Salaam to Mbeya will not be born. Our neighbour (Tanzania) is trying to create more jobs and businesses to its citizenry pamene ife kuno boma tikutifinya kwambiri kukanika kupuluputa. Malawi will be a haven for poverty because of inept leadership that we have. Leadership wants all people from their region for them to give something. Kukama mkaka ng’ombe yowonda kwambiri, no wonder that we are miserably dying out of poverty in Malawi. This is good news for Tanzanians not Malawians.

  7. From lilongwe to mzuzu its 375 km. Mzuzu karonga its 268km. So how come from lilongwe to mbeya its 565km? Gather enough data before publishing your articles mother Nyasatimes

  8. Anzathu kutukuka, ife no manyazi. What happened to our Nsanje port? We were promised by this delinquent APM. But alas it was a gimmick to get vote.

  9. Cost cutting initiative for Malawians , the distance was indeed very long. Bravo Tanzania. This true friendship.

    May God bless Magufuli.

    1. am afraid most of us will cry because sometimes this used cars arrive in Dar es salaam without service with no oil and it is we owners who do the service there unless am told this cars will be carried like in south africa otherwise it is time to start using the Beira port or Durban for the safety of our precious goods .
