Malawi’s Ng’ambi nominated for South Africa Player of Season Award

Flames’ midfielder Robert Ng’ambi has been nominated for South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) most prestigious accolade, the footballer of the season award.

Ng’ambi will face competition from other nominees; teammate Thuso Phala and PSL champions’ Kaizer Chiefs’ midfileder-cum-striker Bernard Parker and his teammate goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune

Amakhosi were crowned as league champions, while Stars finished in seconds spot, just one point behind.

The Malawi emerges strong favourite to win the accolade going by profiles of other nominees posted on Premier Soccer League website.

“Ng’ambi had a fine season for Dikwena, living up to and even exceeding the vast potential he showed during his days at Black Leopards. The attacking midfielder is a skilfull and unpredictable player, his spark and creativity a major asset to Cavin Johnson’s team. He weighed in with seven goals from 27 matches in the Absa Premiership,” the website states about the former Bullets player.

“Phala played a huge role in Stars’ success this season. The 26-year-old is reaching the peak of his career and has been outstanding down the right flank. His strong physique and pace making him a big threat to any defence,” the website reports on Phala.

Khune has also been nominated in the Absa Premiership Players Player of the Season alongside Kaizer Chiefs midfielder-cum- striker Bernard Parker and striker Katlego Mashego.

Ng’ambi was also named player of the last quarter, Q4, of the PSL following his impressive performance at his club Platinum Stars in the eight games.

The attacking midfielder received R15,000 for his contribution towards Stars run for the championship they wer just a point shy of champions Kaizer Chiefs.

Flames assistant coach Ernest Mtawali is the only Malawian to have won the prestigious award in 1985 while playing for Sundowns.

Polokwane striker Esau Kanyenda was also nominated in 2003 while with Jomo Cosmos.

Another Malawian player Limbakani Mzava, who was tipped to win Young Player of Season Award, is conspicuously missing on the nomintaions.
