Malawi’s youth take centre stage as 1,200 gather for landmark policy summit

Everything is set for Malawi’s largest youth gathering of the year, as more than 1,200 young people prepare to converge on Lilongwe for the 2026 National Youth Summit — a landmark three-day event that organisers hope will directly shape the country’s future policy direction.

Running from August 18 to 20, this year’s summit will be held under the powerful theme “Reflecting on Progress and Prospects for Impactful Youth Development”, bringing together an army of young Malawians to take stock of the country’s progress and chart a bold new path forward.

Chairperson of Youth Summit 2026, Ernest Mangani, revealed that this year’s gathering — now in its third edition — will go far beyond speeches and photo opportunities, insisting the event has been designed to translate directly into real policy impact.

“The summit will bring together about 1,200 young people to assess progress in youth development and agree on practical actions to influence policy,” Mangani said.

He explained that the event would serve as a critical platform, uniting young Malawians with key government and civil society stakeholders to tackle head-on the pressing issues surrounding youth development and the country’s broader economic transformation.

Mangani said the outcomes generated over the three days are expected to feed directly into shaping future government policy — giving young Malawians a genuine seat at the table in decisions that will affect their futures.

With anticipation building ahead of Tuesday’s opening, the summit is being billed as one of the most significant youth-led gatherings the country has seen in recent years — a chance, organisers say, for Malawi’s next generation to move from simply discussing change to actively driving it.
