Maldeco cautious of adverse effects on Lake Malawi’s environment

The Foods Company Limited (FCL), formerly Maldeco Fisheries, says it is taking all necessary measures to ensure that there are no long term adverse effects on the environment surrounding the area where their vessel capsized including the waters in Lake Malawi.

One of the company’s vessels, Fish Eagle capsized in the early hours of Saturday, February 1 whilst anchored close to the company’s premises.

According to the company’s Operations Manager Jenara Ngwale, the vessel capsized in “fairly” sallow waters and part of it is still visible above the water.

There were no fatalities from the accident and the only employee who was on the vessel at the time was safely rescued, she says.

“Meanwhile, investigations to establish the cause of the capsizing are being carried out by the company’s engineers in conjunction with officials from the Marine Department of the Malawi Police Service and the Marine Department within the Ministry of Transport and Public Works.

“In addition, steps are being taken to salvage the vessel and to have it float again within reasonable time'” said Ngwale.

She also said her company is making all efforts to ensure that there is continued adequate supply of fish stocks throughout the country.
