Man hangs after sexual assault on step daughter
A 53 year old man in Mzimba District committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree after he was caught sexually assaulting a 13 year old stepdaughter.
Mzimba Police Publicist Sergeant Gift Nyirongo confirmed the development saying the deceased Jasten Chikapa Nkhoma of Kafoteka Mkandawire village, Traditional Authority Mzikubola had learnt that there was a manhunt for him in relation to the defielement.
Nyirongo said his wife found him on the night of February 2, 2014 at around 11 pm.
“He ran away to a nearby bush whilst naked and was found hanging dead. Post mortem conducted and cause of death is due strangulation. No foul play has been suspected,” the Publicist said.
Statistics from Mzimba Police Station show that the district has grappled with increasing cases of Suicide and Sudden deaths for the past five years.
“But in 2013 most of the cases occurred in the areas of Paramount Chief M’mbelwa where we registered 13 cases, seconded by Traditional Authority Chindi with 9nine cases,” Nyirongo said.
He said the major causes of the deaths ranged from family problems and excessive beer drinking without eating.
Various programmes by police have failed to curb the deaths.
“We are appealing to the general public and other stakeholders to take part in combating these cases. It should rather be a concern of everybody in the district,” said Nyirongo.
