Malopa elected VP for Africa Media network

Director General for state-controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Bright Malopa has been elected vice president of   African Broadcast Media Partnership (ABMP), an a elite club of 38 public broadcasters  responsible for major global campaigns.

According to a letter sent to Malopa by Angela Stewart-Buchanan of the network’s board, Malopa will be on the position “along with Ms. Betsy Mugamba, General Manager of 88.2 Sanyu FM in Uganda”

Charles Snetter, President and Owner of Radio Monrovia and Monrovia TV, Liberia was elected as the new Chairperson.

Malopa: Delighted

“We would also like to thank you for your commitment to contributing to the growth and sustainability of ABMP and know that you will do the Committee proud in your new role,” Stewart–‐Buchanan wrote Malopa in the letter seen by Nyasa Times.

‘Tea bag strength’

When contacted by Nyasa Times, Malopa said he was greatly humbled to be given the role.

“Well, things are happening so fast to me. One day, you hear undesirable stuff from agents of mendacity a complete reminder that gossip, petty jealousies and hatred are occupational hazards to any public officer because usually as is the case most of the times, those who are in the habit of ushering those mendacious statements often see too small of the circle of events,” he said

He added: “Then next day you receive a pat on the back from reputable and respected people. Perhaps a confirmation that  you can only see the strength of a tea bag if it is put in hot water.”

On ‘ugly’ remarks

The headline-grabbing MBC boss asked to comment on reports that presenter Marie Segula was insulted by her boss director of programs and news Chimwemwe Banda,  to the extent insinuating that she is ‘ugly’ Malopa said he does not believe in such reports.

“I doubt if Chimwemwe really said that,” Malopa said.

He also said Segula was still with the state broadcaste working at MBC Radio 2 .

“She was interviewed and recruited by Chimwemwe Banda. It was Chimwemwe who recomended her to become a news anchor whilst on probation which is not the norm.I wonder how she can block someone on a less taxing asignment like MC whilst allowing her to go on air? “ Malopa said.

He described Mary as a “brilliant” presenter and ofcourse beautiful.

Banda could not be reached. She was reported outside Malawi.
