Two children dead after wall collapse

Two children were killed and three others injured after a dilapidated pillar collapsed on them in Salima district Sunday evening.

The accident occurred inside Lifidzi market in the district at around 5.00pm, according to eye witnesses.

One of the eye witnesses, Elias Ndadza said the five children were playing near the crumbling wall the market when it suddenly fell on them.

“Two of the children [names withheld] aged seven and 11 died tragically on the spot while three others sustained injuries,” Ndadza told a local radio.

The two children, a girl (11 years) and a boy, were both in Standard one at Lifidzi Primary School where Ndadza teaches.

He said the three survivors were rushed to Mchoma Health Centre, some meters away from the accident scene, where they are receiving treatment.

The eye witness said out of the three, two sustained serious injuries while the other survived with a minor injury.

Burial of the two children took place on Monday there.
