Man arrested for asking some water used for washing dead bodies at mortuary

Police in Malawi central region district of  Mchinji  bordering with Zambia have arrested 20- year- old Dziwani Phiri from Mwalabo village TA Kalembo in Balaka for enticing a mortuary attendant to give him water used for washing dead bodies.

According to Mchinji District Police Prosecution Officer Ornelius Mtopela, the suspect approached the mortuary attendant on Sunday afternoon at Mchinji District Hospital and asked for the water to use for rituals to enable him become economically rich.

“The attendant was scared and frightened with the request by the man to the effect that he called for a police officer from central investigations department (CID) to follow the matter, as the dead body had to undergo a postmortem,” he said.

Mtopela said currently the police are still looking for an appropriate charge against him, but up until they find an appropriate charge they are holding him for soliciting public officers to fail to carry out their duties.arrest

“This is against section 125 subsection A of the penal code. It attracts a sentence of up to five years,” he said.

Phiri will appear before court soon, said Mtopela.

Mtopela also said the suspect was asked to acquire water that was used for cleaning a dead body by a witchdoctor from Mozambique who told him to do so as part of rituals to make him rich.

Phiri was staying at Manoto in the neighboring Zambia by the time he got arrested.—Malawi News Agency
