Man beats wife to death, hangs himself: Malawi Police suspect domestic row

A 58-year-old man in Phalombe district on Wednesday March 1 beat up his wife to death and later hanged himself in his bedroom, Malawi police have confirmed.

The deceased have been identified as Ethel Kachepa, 49, of Nyangu village and Lifred Mukhweya of Nakoma village, both from T/A Mkanda in Mulanje district.

The incident occurred just a day when the couple were seen together within Chebula village drunk on their way home from a drinking joint.

“On 1st March, 2017 a man who was on his way to the garden found a body of a woman lying dead with swollen head, bruises all over the body, completely naked and muddy dumped in a maize field. He notified relatives of the deceased as he had identified the body,” explained Phalombe police Public Relations Officer, Augustus Nkhwazi.

“People rushed to the scene and suspected that the husband of the deceased might have a hand in the death. When the relatives went to check on the husband at their house, they found him hanging in his bedroom.”

The incident was reported to Mulomba Police Unit.

Postmortems on both bodies by Phalombe Health Centre medical officer indicated that the woman died of brain damage due to head injuries while the husband died of suffocation due to strangulation.

Meanwhile, Police have instituted investigations on the matter but they suspect they had domestic row.

Sources said the wife had threatened to dump the husband.
